Foley Catheter Biofilm Formation Comparison Study in an In-Vitro Assay

چکیده
Catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is the most common nosocomial infection, accounting for more than 1 million patients annually in United States acutecare hospitals and extended-care facilities. Infected urinary catheters are covered by a thick biofilm that contain the infecting organisms. These organisms are embedded in a matrix of host proteins and microbial slime. This biofilm provides a “home” for the organisms and promotes increased drug resistance. These biofilm bacteria are notably resistant to antibiotics, and CAUTI infections cannot normally be cleared without the removal of this most common of medical devices. Novel anti-infective impregnated urinary catheters with anti-infective surfaces have been clinically proven to significantly reduce short term CAUTI (less than 2 weeks).

Antibacterial Modification of Intravascular Catheter Surface for the Prevention of Catheter-Associated Infection
Objective: Intravascular catheter-associated infection has been increasing hospitalization in post-surgery patients mainly due to microbial colonization of the catheter surface and formation of a superficial biofilm layer. The present study is aimed in developing an effective antibacterial device which can prevent colonization of organisms by modification of catheter. Methods: In the present st...

متن کاملIn vitro activity of Quercus brantii extracts against biofilm- producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Background: Biofilm formation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a serious concern in treatment of diseases and medical industries. Natural products that originate in plants can influence microbial biofilm formation. The effect of ethyl acetate, methanol and water- methanol extracts of Quercus brantii on biofilm formation and biofilm disruption of P. aeruginosa were investigated in this study. Methods...
متن کاملComparison of Vaginal Misoprostol with Foley Catheter for Cervical Ripening and Induction of Labor
At times, despite an unripe cervix, induction of labor may be needed. In these cases, a safe and suitable method should be considered for cervical ripening and pregnancy termination. The aim of this study is the comparison of vaginal misoprostol with Foley catheter for cervical ripening and induction of labor. This randomized clinical trial was performed on 108 pregnant women who had referred t...
متن کاملPlasma can reduce Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilm formation on medical polymers
Medical polymers, such as urinary catheters are widely used biomaterials. One of the main problem for using the urinary catheters is biofilm formation on their surface, when they are used in a long time in the body. Virulence and pathogenicity of Staphylococcus epidermidis is often enhanced when growing as a biofilm. Many techniques have been presented to reduce the biofilm formation by surface...
